Winter Blackmouth Salmon Season Opens Tomorrow (Sat., Feb. 16th)
Fishing for hatchery chinook salmon, better known as blackmouth, reopens this Sat., Feb. 16th in south Puget Sound’s Marine Area 11, which includes areas between Vashon/Burien and Tacoma.
For the next few weeks, fishing should be good for salmon anglers, especially off Three Tree Point in Burien.
“These winter blackmouth are probably the feistiest fish in Puget Sound,†said Jerry Skeen, who has run Capt. Jerry’s Charters for 25 years.
Bill Dever, who runs Puget Sound Salmon Charters, has fished the area for 17 years. He said the best fishing will be in the coming weeks.
“Earlier in the day and earlier in the season, the better chances you are going to have. The closer we get to spring, the fish seem to dissipate,†he said.
According to local experts, Three Tree Point is consistently good for salmon fishing, as the eddies created by both incoming and outgoing tides “congregates” the bait (insert your own witty fish Sunday School joke here).
So…expect to see some boats hanging out off the point over the next few weeks folks…
