Burien’s annual “Arts-A-Glow” festival lit up the evening at Town Square Saturday night (Sept. 12th), with lots of do-it-yourselfers making amazing, one-of-a-kind lanterns, along with performers in costumes, stilt-walkers, belly dancers, musicians and much more.

Photographer Michael Brunk was there to capture both visual and audio elements, which he has built into the following “SoundSlideshow”:

This is one of the reasons I’m going to miss the Burien/Interim Art Space so much when its time is up. I would much rather have art at the heart of Burien than an empty lot or more empty condos.

I have to agree with Michael- The B/IAS has been one of the plus things about Burien- You may not agree with the choice of art- but that is what art is for – to stimulate discussion!

Many Thanks to Dane and Kathy for bringing the B/IAS into existence. It will be greatly missed next year

Just wanted to thank the City of Burien and the Burien community for giving us a wonderful opportunity to stilt walk and have a great evening in Burien.

Those amazing illuminated costumes we wore were made by Leslie Zenz, an Olympia-based celebration artist. Incredible!

    Thanks again, B-Town!

Abyssinian Dance Drum Circle at Arts-A-Glow Festival

We at Abyssinian Dance Center greatly appreciated the turnout for the drum circle at the Burien Arts-a-Glow Festival.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to participate and perform in events such as these and to share with the community some of the beautiful cultural gifts and traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Abyssinian Dance Center has a regular monthly Rhythm Jam open to the public on the third Friday of each month and everyone is welcome!

Bring your drums, tambourines, zils, hip scarves, or just come and dance or clap to the rhythms as you learn new to dance and to drum to the Middle Eastern rhythms. We have loaner zils and hip scarves to help get people in the spirit!

There’s always food and beverages to share, feel free to bring something for the table. The environment is warm and loving and lots of fun and laughter.

Here is the link to last month’s Rhythm Jam photo’s on FaceBook!

As you can see from the pictures, we have a great time!

For more information, check out our website or call the studio and ask for Kellie or Mira at 206.988.4897! We look forward to drumming and dancing with you soon!
