Your help is needed to help bicycles and pedestrians in Burien – Sustainable Burien is teaming up with the Cascade Bicycle Club and the City of Burien to count the number of people who walk or bike to their destinations.

In a partnership with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Cascade Bicycle Club, volunteers will count people bicycling and walking on paths, bike lanes, sidewalks, and roads. We’ve targeted key locations around Burien.

Volunteer shifts available are:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 29th
  • Wednesday, Sept. 30th
  • Thursday, Oct. 1st

There are two shifts available:

  • 7am to 9am
  • 4pm to 6pm

WSDOT will use this count information to track progress toward the state’s goal of increasing bicycling and walking in Washington and reducing the number of vehicle miles driven.

Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond puts it simply:

“When people have safe and convenient places to walk and bicycle, they are more likely to leave their car at home. This count helps us to measure the demand for and benefits of existing paths and trails, and to identify new needs.”

    1. Make sure you send your registration information in to the Cascade Bicycle Club email listed. Right now we’re up 8 or 9 volunteers and could use 5-6 more.

  1. While I won’t be able to volunteer (because I have to work) I’ll be doing my part by riding my bike to work (which I do almost every day). I’m pleased to read about this study and I’m hopeful our streets will continue to become safer for cyclists and pedestrians. Thank you for the work of Cascade Bicycle Club. (and yes, I’m a member)

    1. Jobs do have a tendancy to get in the way of things.

I too am an everyday bike commuter and this should be the first of many opportunities to get involved in the promotion of safe/healthy transportation choices in Burien.

There is a good group forming within the Sustainable Burien organization that is developing different ideas (from bike racks to pub crawls) all with the goal of increasing transportation choices in Burien (and having fun). Our next meeting is Sunday Oct 11 from 2-4pm at the new Burien Library. Or you can always contact us through the SuBu website.

We’d love to have another empassioned cyclist among our ranks!
