B-TOWN BIZ: "Piranha Joe's" Opening In Former Keg Spot In May; Benefit 4/24
Story & Photos by Janet Grella
Piranaha Joe’s will be opening in May, but rest assured, when you go there to enjoy this new Burien eatery, you’ll be eating the fish, it won’t be eating you!
The new restaurant, housed in the former Keg location at the Safeway Plaza on SW 148th, will not be called the “Red Fish Grill” as previously reported, but “Piranha Joe’s.”
Why Piranha Joe’s?
Owner Coy Wood tells The B-Town Blog that “my wife and daughter wanted that name.”
Piranha Joe’s will open “around May 1,” according to Coy, but first they’re “hosting a fundraiser for Highline Medical Center on April 24, where guests will sample a limited menu.” Here’s a flier for it:
When open, Piranha Joe’s will serve dinner only for three weeks, and then open for lunch as well after that. Coy tells us that “we’ve kept the best of The Keg, with steaks and prime rib and added fish and seafood to the menu, and some weird food like alligator!” They’ll also have entrees of chicken and baby back ribs.
Once in full swing, they’ll be offering a happy hour from 3-6pm and 9-11pm, with half-price appetizers and discounted drinks.
And for the first time ever in Burien, Piranha Joe’s will present a Gluten-Free menu. If you want to see what Gluten-Free dining is like, check out the menu from Coy’s other restaurant Woody’s on the Water. Coy opened that restaurant in Tacoma in 2007. It’s on the Thea Foss Waterway next to the Museum of Glass.
Piranha Joe’s will employ 35-40 people, and they’re currently accepting applications.
According to Chef and Kitchen Manager Torri Mueri (former Keg patrons will know her as Torri Clemons, from when she served as Chef), Piranha Joe’s will be “coastal casual,” as evidenced by the Hawaiian shirt that the bar staff will be wearing. The dining room staff will be wearing white shirts and really ‘fun’ ties.
