Ever Go To Camp Waskowitz? Reunion Open House Is Sunday, June 6
Highline School District’s Waskowitz Outdoor School will be holding a Reunion Open House on Sunday, June 6th, from 10am until 3pm, and they’re inviting all Campers, Counselors, Teachers and their families to come up and revisit this special place of wonderful memories.
Since 1936, thousands and thousands of Highline School District 6th graders have attended “Outdoor School” at Waskowitz, where they learned about water ecology, forestry, wildlife habitat and respect for the natural environment. In fact, students in the Highline School District were learning about “Being Green” long before there was such a thing.
Here are the details:
WHAT: Reunion Open House for Camp Waskowitz.
WHEN: Sunday, June 6th from 10am – 3pm.
WHERE: Camp Waskowitz, located at 45505 SE 150th Street in North Bend, WA 98045; (425) 277-7195.
INFO: More info available at Waskowitz’ website here.
The Highline School District first utilized Camp Waskowitz in 1947, while it was under private ownership. In 1957, the camp facility was purchased by the Highline School District with the initial down payment of $25,000 provided by the students of Highline High School who had been raising money to build a stadium. Since the very beginning, Waskowitz has been a place of special memories – cabin cheers, skits and songs in the “Old Barn,” square dancing, campfires, or hiking the trails and going up into the Fire Tower in the 300 acres.
Hundreds of Douglas Fir trees throughout Highline are a result of students bringing them back from Waskowitz and planting them in their yards. Many of these trees are well over 70 feet tall, and BTB Contributor Jim Branson, one of the members in the Waskowitz Alumni Facebook page, is even attempting to locate and create a map of these trees, so if you have one of these trees in your yard, please let him know.
We are hoping with this Open House to provide an opportunity for our High School Leaders, teachers and former Staff members to reconnect with Waskowitz and give us a chance to once again say THANK YOU! It is the hard work and dedication to the students attending Waskowitz Outdoor School by these folks that has made this nationally recognized Environmental Education program what it is today.
Please come and join us on June 6th!
