Here’s What To Expect In Sunday’s Independence Day Parade; Plus A Map
Burien’s 89th annual Independence Day Parade is scheduled for this Sunday, July 4th, beginning at 3pm, and since we’re the main Media Sponsor, we thought we’d take a few moments to let you in on what you can expect to see.
According to Nancy Hinthorne of the Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce:
Our Grand Marshals will be Reuben & Margie Breed, who have been on the Burien Citizen’s Patrol since 1999. They have participated in many activities include the Burien Strawberry Festival, the Burien Independence Day Parade, Oktoberfest and many more. They have also spent many of those years patrolling the streets of Burien in the Citizen’s Patrol Car, keeping our neighborhoods safe. Reuben also enjoys running radar in the school zones to make sure the kids make it to and from school safely.
Patriots Marching Band from Spring Lake Park, MN, will be marching in the parade. The band is a cooperative venture between the Band Programs of St. Anthony Village and Spring Lake Park High Schools near Minneapolis, MN. The Patriots have traveled extensively and won awards in major parades at the Calgary Stampede in Canada, Bristol, Rhode Island; Gatlinburg, Tennessee; Atlanta, Georgia; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. The Patriots’ performance involves precision=style marking and a medley of Americana music.
Here are some videos of the Patriots in action from other parades around the US:
Also not to be missed:
- The Seattle Harley Owners Group will thunder through the route just before the parade begins.
- The legendary Seafair Pirates will shiver yer timberrrs!
- Ronald McDonald will drive around on a Segway (we have no idea either folks…)!
And, this being Burien, ya never know what kind of renegades might “crash” the parade – here’s a video from the 1991 parade when a man who calls himself “Indian Jeff” drove his 1912 Harley Davidson through Elmer’s Pub and right into the parade:
According to the Youtube description:
Indian Jeff riding his 1912 HD single in the Burien, WA 1991 Fourth of July parade. He was “busted” for “parading without a permit” near the end of the parade route. For many years he would ride the single through a local tavern and come out the front door to join the other “old junk” in the parade. Permit? I don’t need no freakin permit!
The parade begins at 3pm on Sunday, July 4, 2010, at Ambaum Blvd. SW and SW 149th St. The route will head south on Ambaum, east on SW 153rd, north on 4th Ave. SW, then west on SW 152nd.
