Normandy Park City Manager Doug Schulze said the winner of the First Annual Normandy Park Hoop Fest are the “206 Ballers,” who beat Preston 18-13 Saturday, July 31st in a game where each hoop garners one point.

“We look forward to even greater participation next year,” Schulze said.

The event took place at Normandy Park Towne Center, and was sponsored by the City of Normandy Park Police Department with generous support from Normandy Park Athletic, Desert Sun, Wayne’s Service Center, Archery Bistro (BTB Advertiser), QFC, Allied Waste and Puget Sound Energy.

Here are some pics taken at the event:

Breed and Preston go at it in an effort to make it to the finals. Preston advanced, losing to the "206 Ballers" 18 to 13.

Shiny trophies await the winners.

This “tournament” was pretty much a bust. There were only 9 teams there (they were hoping for 16) and zero participation from any of the sponsors or city.

This kind of event is a good idea and usually a lot of fun. I guess if it is promoted and recruited right it can get a well rounded crowd. I tried to go and be a spectator but couldn’t find any times that it was starting and there wasn’t much info about it on any of the sites associated with it. Maybe at the second annual Hoopfest there could be different age groups, coed teams and female teams. Maybe before school lets out next June the gym teachers could be contacted and students recruited. The local athletic clubs, all 2 of them, could also form teams or have participants. Just a couple of ideas.

Anyway point being not enough information was out there, and sorry for the sponsers that did try to help a good idea. Maybe next year.
