Special to The B-Town Blog

Burien Little Theatre was pleased to serve as host to the film crew from “Howard From Ohio” last Friday (Aug. 6), making this the second film shoot in Burien in the last 10 days.

“Howard From Ohio” is a film that’s currently in production by Writer, Producer, and Director SJ Chiro, and stars Stacey Plum and John Paulsen. This independent film was in need of a place to call home for a day while they did some daylight filming on B-Town’s 509 freeway.

That’s right, two movies have been shot right here in Burien in under 10 days. The B-Town Blog had a posting last week about the night-time shoot of “Grassroots” (story here). Then “Howard From Ohio” came to Burien on Friday. Two movie shoots in Burien almost back-to-back – this is good for Burien, and BLT is happy to help another arts organization, whenever possible.

When I read the post about “Grassroots,” I thought, Talkies in Burien? What next? Then on Wednesday, BLT got an email from one of its alumni, Maria Wardian (after 30 years, a lot of actors and tech folks have passed through BLT’s doors. BLT has even brought together a number of couples who went on to marry.)

Maria said she was assistant-directing on a short independent film called “Howard From Ohio.” The film was almost done filming. They were trying to find a place in Burien to stage equipment and for craft services/meals for a day of filming some car-driving and car camera mount scenes along the 509. Maria remembered what a great option the theater could be if it was available.

While not too sure if this whole talkie moving picture thing will ever catch on, Burien Little Theatre, the home of better live theater, was happy to help out. BLT’s first show of its 30th season, “Reefer Madness the Musical” was not rehearsing on Friday, so “Howard From Ohio’s” timing could not have been better.

Watching part of the shoot, I finally realized why movie actors spend so much time standing around. All of the tech work that Burien Little Theatre is doing now to get ready for “Reefer the Madness the Musical” is done on the day of the shoot for a movie. And they have to control cameras on top of it all.

If BLT’s experience with the crew and actors from “Howard From Ohio” is any indication, the movie will be great. And who knows, Burien may still become the location of choice for talkies in the Northwest.

Perhaps the time has come for the Office of the Mayor to set up a film commission!

I disagree…that would be just another opportunity for Burien to balloon the payroll at taxpayer’s expense. And new permit fees and the regulations they’d impose for filming would keep independent production crews away.
