Our friends at Burien Little Theatre have been busy rehearsing, staging and prepping their smokin’ stage for the premiere of “Reefer Madness: The Musical,” which opens this Friday night, Sept. 24th.

BLT is celebrating its’ 30th year in Burien, and what better way to celebrate than lighting one up and having a few great laughs?

BLT is located in the “old” Burien Community Center, in the northwest corner of the intersection of 4th Ave SW and SW 146th Street in Burien.

Written by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney, and inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name (view the entire original film to the left), this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence.

The addictive and clever musical numbers range from big Broadway-style showstoppers to swing tunes like “Down at the Ol’ Five and Dime” and the Vegas-style “Listen to Jesus, Jimmy,” featuring J.C. Himself leading a chorus of showgirl angels! Reefer Madness is a highly stylized and satirical political commentary. It contains adult humor, religious parody, and drug use, as well as suggested violence and sexual explicitness.  It therefore may be inappropriate for younger audiences.

As BLT turns 30, it is time to warn the kids about the danger of the evil reefer!

UPDATE: We just found a “pirated” video of a recent rehearsal of Reefer on YouTube – check it out before it’s removed:

I just saw this, and it’s a hoot! Terrific casting, acting singing & dancing.

A fun show to experience, unless you’re prone to being easily offended (Yes, Our Lord does put in an appearance: and who knew he could carry a tune so well?)

The production has non-stop energy to burn, with costuming, lighting and props that change at such an unflagging pace that it becomes a running gag itself. The crack five-piece band keep things hopping with the toe-tapping score.

If all you know of “Reefer Madness” is the grainy, deadpan movie you giggled through in college, be prepared to be surprised. The point is clearly made in BLT’s rendition that this isn’t (just) about the ignorance of people in the 1930’s-40’s towards marijuana: it slyly echoes those aspects of unenlightenment and hysteria that can exist today, in various forms. As such, it should be required viewing as a cautionary tale…albeit a fun one with catchy music. By all means, go!
