VIDEO: Record Turnout For Polar Bear Plunge; Plus, BTB’s Bart Wins Trophy!
Story and Video by Scott Schaefer
Under crystal clear, sunny blue skies, on a New Year’s Day when the water temperature (around 46 degrees) was warmer than the air (around 36 degrees), a record 50 or so brave souls took part in the 10th annual Polar Bear Plunge at Burien’s Three Tree Point.
Enthusiastic participants ranged from little children to elderly grandparents and everyone in-between, all overseen by a costumed Polar Bear wearing a “2011” sash as well as dozens of viewers.
As is the custom, every year one lucky fool plunger is awarded the annual “Three Tree Point Polar Bear Plunge” trophy made of driftwood and a plaster polar bear, and this year was a true shocker – The B-Town Blog’s own Bart Bryan won! We’re not sure how this mistake happened, but we know that Bart was able to escape safely with the driftwood trophy, with the only requirement to return it (and participate) at next year’s event.
Actually, we know two reasons Bart won:
- His costume, consisting of a Hef-like silk bathrobe with a funky, customized blue and gold terrycloth B-Town Blog embroidered sweatsuit underneath, made by BTB Advertiser Jeanane Tescar-Burcham of Gram’s Gift Closet.
- His off-key, improvised and customized rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” surely set hearts racing up and down SW 172nd.
Here’s the video, shot and produced by Publisher Scott Schaefer, and featuring our exclusive, waterproof “Polar Bear Plunge POV” cam (NOTE: you can watch it in HD by selecting the resolution where it says “360p” on the right side of the control bar at the bottom):
