Keyboardist/Composer/Instructor Ryan Burns is a luminary in the Seattle music scene, having brought his special touch to a diverse array of projects, including award-winning jazz groups Bebop and Destruction (2004 Seattle Weekly “Best Jazz/Avant-Garde Band”), Thomas Marriott’s Willie Nelson Project (2008 Earshot Jazz Magazine “Best NW ‘Outside’ Jazz Group”), and Matt Jorgensen +451 (2003 Earshot Jazz Magazine’s “Best Acoustic Group”), with which Burns has toured extensively. Burns musical endeavors range from the classic piano trio format to the world of electronic jazz and rock.
Ryan Burns first electric CD as a leader is the 2010 release “Birds,” which prominently features analog keyboards such as Fender Rhodes, Hammond Organ, and Moog Synthesizer. The recording of all original material also features bassist Geoff Cooke, drummer Jose Martinez, and saxophonist Mark Taylor. Burns electric keyboard work is also featured in the trio Harrybu McCage, a jazz project led by drummer Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden) which performed at Tennessee’s Bonaroo Festival and elsewhere, and recorded the self-titled “HarryBu McCage” (Monkey Wrench 2008).
Burns also leads The Ryan Burns Trio, which explores the classic piano trio format, much in the lineage of greats Ahmad Jamal, Oscar Peterson, and Bill Evans. Burns has released three acoustic piano trio CD’s as a composer/bandleader, most recently “Ryan Burns Trio- Live at the LAB” (Odd Bird Records 2008) with bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer Tad Britton, and “Tree-O” (Odd Bird Records 2007) featuring all original compositions w/ bassist Geoff Cooke and drummer Jose Martinez. Recorded a decade earlier, “That’s The Ryan Burns Trio (Indie 1998) also features Burns compositions performed with bassist Geoff Harper and drummer Mike Stafford, adding special guests on several tracks.
Burns performance highlights include the 2008 Ballard Jazz Festival with legendary saxophonist Hadley Caliman, which was awarded “NW Concert of the Year” by Earshot Jazz magazine. Burns has performed with the Tacoma Symphony, appeared on the Food Network TV show “Food Nation with Bobby Flay,” and also has recorded and performed with rock groups such as Peter DiStefano (Porno For Pyros, Jane’s Addiction), 17th Chapter, and Katherine Moore Situation. Burns also doubles on guitar and bass in classic rock cover bands Black Vinyl All-Stars and Urban Achievers.
