The Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence celebrated their 11th annual Gold Star Awards at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Tukwila today. New this year was a breakfast session in addition to the traditional luncheon.

This annual event recognizes employees and volunteers from the Highline School District that have been nominated by people who live and work in the local area. Winners are then chosen by a panel of judges. The event also serves as an opportunity to raise funds to support the foundation’s mission.

The 2011 Gold Star Winners were:

  • Outstanding Administrator: Cherrie Smith, Highline School District
  • Outstanding Classified Employee: Tom Manola, Puget Sound Skills Center
  • Outstanding Teacher: Beverly Mowrer, New Start High School
  • Outstanding Volunteer: Mike Borfitz, Aviation High School
  • Outstanding Alumnus: Brad Tilden, Alaska Airlines
