Senior Services, a non-profit that includes the Hyde Shuttles, is urgently seeking volunteers in the Burien area to help sustain its services for seniors and people with disabilities.

Volunteers are needed to drive seniors and the disabled around Burien.

Here’s more from a press release:

All over Burien, seniors and people with disabilities rely on the Hyde Shuttle to get where they need to go.

Gladys, a Hyde Shuttle user who lives in a semi-assisted living center in Burien, names the Hyde Shuttle as one of the reasons that she is still able to live independently.

“The Shuttle is a great boon to me,” she said. “I no longer have to fight to get where I need to go.”

Before she started riding the Hyde Shuttle, Gladys felt anxious and worried about running simple errands, such as going to the grocery store or getting to the doctor. She would have to pay for costly taxi rides or wait until her son could take time off from work. Now she calls the Hyde Shuttle and goes to the store and medical appointments on her own.

But the Hyde Shuttle has lately been forced to cancel routes due to a lack of volunteer drivers. With the economic downturn, more and more people are turning to the Hyde Shuttle for help. The program urgently needs to recruit more volunteer drivers.

Volunteers choose their weekly shifts and receive free training in defensive driving and passenger assistance. They do not need a special driver’s license and do no lifting or bearing of weight. And current volunteers agree that the biggest benefit from driving the Hyde Shuttle is seeing the direct impact of their actions in the lives of the people they serve. A Shuttle ride often makes a senior’s day.
