The Washington State Patrol is reporting that a driver received critical injuries from striking a blocking disabled logging truck when attempting to pass traffic as it merged onto southbound I-5 from SR-518.

Before 6:45 a.m. Thursday morning (April 12), a semi-truck became disabled in the right lane of southbound I-5 just past SR-518. A short time later a white Chevy SUV was preparing to merge from 518 in slow moving traffic. Unaware that a semi-truck was blocking the right lane ahead of the driver, a 23-year old Tukwila man aggressively cut across the gore point in an attempt to merge onto I-5 before legally allowed. Witnesses stated the Chevy was following a UPS truck which most likely blocked his view of the disabled semi.

“The tragic results of this collision are easily preventable,” the WSP said in a statement. “The solid white lines that stretch out from exit and onramps are to restrict drivers from making lane changes before it is safe to do so. Drivers that try to make up for lost time on the roadway often make decisions that can have life changing results. Cutting time off a commute is never worth the risk.”

The incident on 12 Apr 2012 with the disabled logging truck and the agrressive driver on I-5 and HWY 18 resulted in the driver of the SUV dying the next day. The young man was a good hearted guy who was also an agressive sales associate who worked for me. My thoughts and prayes go out to his family, may he “Rest In Peace”.
