Saltwater Cafe Owner Daxa Sabhaya, right, serves US Forest Ranger John Johnson.

Meet Daxa Sabhaya, owner of new Advertiser Saltwater Cafe, located in a unique, historic building at the shore’s edge of Saltwater State Park in Des Moines.

Pursuing her dream of owning a cafe and providing “very personalized service,” Daxa opened just a few weeks ago to great customer response. Guests especially enjoy entering the cafe and finding warm and inviting indoor seating complemented by a historic, large river rock fireplace.

The original building and fireplace was built by the citizens of Des Moines along with members of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) who had a camp on the grounds of what is now Saltwater State Park. Now customers can cuddle up to the fireplace in large easy chairs and enjoy the complimentary wi-fi while sipping a cup of organic coffee.

The fireplace in the Saltwater Cafe was built by the CCC.

Along with the usual cafe fare, guests can also choose from healthy options such as fresh squeezed juices, smoothies, milkshakes and sandwiches made daily.

Saltwater Cafe can also accommodate groups or business meetings.

Daxa competed for the concessionaire placement at Saltwater with her plan to make visiting the Saltwater Cafe more of an experience, allowing her customer’s to “slow-down” and enjoy the view of a mini-vacation and relaxation in comfortable surroundings.

  • The Saltwater Cafe is open Tuesday – Sunday from 9 a.m. – park closing(dusk).
  • Phone number is 206-718-1863.
