The second-ever ‘Cash Mob Burien’ will have the theme ‘Cash Mob for Mom’ and take place this Saturday, May 13, starting at 3 p.m. with a meeting at Roundtable Pizza (15730 1st Ave South).

Participants are asked to bring $20 cash to spend at a local, independent Burien business, the name/location of which will be announced at the event.

“This week’s location is the perfect place to find a gift for Mom and we are lovingly referring to this event as ‘Cash Mob for Mom,'” said Organizer Gina Bourdage, Executive Director of Discover Burien. “Afterward, mobbers are invited to meet back at Roundtable Pizza in their banquet area where proceeds from our group will be donated by Roundtable to the Highline Food Bank.”

Here’s some background on the local business to be Cash Mobbed this week:

This business was nominated for the Cash Mob due to the unfortunate situation it has been through in order to be in our community. The owner worked with a local telephone company for 12 loyal years then was unexpectedly laid off with little prospect for the future. To keep moving forward the shop owner decided to take advantage of a great opportunity at Highline Community College through the Start Zone Retraining Program, and received extensive guidance and direction with developing a small business plan. While doing research in several different communities our small business owner fell in love with the Burien area for its small community feel with the old town appeal.

The process of launching the business was started by applying for a small business loan and initially everything seemed to be going well. Unfortunately, in the end the loan did not come through leaving all of the plans in limbo. The owner having no other option decided to take a chance and cashed in the small severance package that was supposed to be used as a financial cushion, and started up this local business anyway. Unfortunately, with the economy taking a challenging for all small business, and that over 70 % of the company’s business does not shop on-line K.G. has had to start selling aspects of the business not initially intended to be sold in order for pay the mortgage and keep the lights on.

Please come help support this local business owner’s dream of staying in the Burien Community.
