Get ready to pedal B-Town – Burien Bike Day will be held on Friday, May 18!

Last year, over 20,000 people in the Seattle metro area took to the streets on bicycles, pedaling their way to work, school, and the store on National Bike Day.

For Bike Day this year, newly formed Walk/Bike Burien (WABI) is challenging Burien to get 100 people on bicycles. To help reach this goal, WABI is teaming up with local businesses to offer events and shameless rewards for people of all ages and abilities who get on their bikes.

Bike Commuter Support Station
WABI, along with Bicycles West and Freggies will host a morning Bike Commuter Support Station at Town Square for Burienites pedaling their way to work or the Transit Center. From 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.on Friday May 18, the station will offer fresh organic snacks, cool giveaways, coupons, and a gathering place for folks giving bicycle-commuting a try. The Station will also have the mechanical pros from Bicycles West, and experienced bike commuters on hand to discuss routes and safety, and to answer your cycling questions.

Bike SaFaRi (Safe Family Ride)
At 10:00 am WABI will be sponsoring its first Bike SaFaRi (Safe Family Ride) of 2012. With many local schools closed on Friday May 18th, WABI ride leaders will be guiding a Bike SaFaRi especially for those hard-working parents at home with kids for the day. As always, the Bike SaFaRi will cover a safe, flat route: a perfect excursion for adults and kids building confidence, street smarts, and bicycling skills. The ride will end back at Burien Town Square at approximately 11:30 a.m.  For more information and a recap on Burien Bike SaFaRis, visit this page.

Other perks:

  • Bicycles West will be giving away coupons to all event participants good for 25% off service and 20% off any part, accessory, clothing or shoe purchase.
  • Grand Central Bakery is offering a free baguette to any customer that arrives in their store with their bicycle helmet on the morning of Friday, May 18.
  • Cyclists participating in the events will be counted toward the goal of getting 100 people on bicycles as will any cyclists that post their rides on the WABI Facebook Page:
