An elderly man crashed his Ford F-150 truck into the west wall of the Bartell Drugs located at 14901 4th Ave SW in Burien Thursday afternoon around 3:30 p.m.

The 90-year old man appeared to be uninjured.

However, the building wasn’t so lucky, as it suffered some damage. Inside, a cosmetics counter was knocked over and product was strewn about.

Reports are that the man may have stepped on the gas pedal as he was parking his truck.

Photographer Michael Brunk was on the scene shortly after the accident, which was tipped to us by former BTBer Joy Steele (click images to see larger versions):

I love old folks – but north of 85 or 90, generally, driving isn’t a good idea. Thank god there wasn’t a woman with a stroller heading up that sidewalk. #justsayin

Might be time to take the license away family.

That’s nice. Let’s take photos of the poor man sitting in the chair and post it online. Granted, someone could have been hurt, but they weren’t.

If you look closely, you’ll see in the other picture that the police officer was handing the gentleman a piece of paper, and he is likely reading it, or filling it out in the second picture.
I was in the Bartell’s when the crash happened, and it sounded like an small explosion on the other side of the wall. Two minutes earlier I had been standing right where destroyed display was.
Everyone present made sure that no one inside was hurt, and immediately offered aid to the driver of the truck. Huge praise for the Bartell’s management and employees for being quick thinking, and offering the gentleman a place to sit while he awaited the arrival of the police.
The whole event was more than a little unnerving.

We are all heading toward advanced age. I am sympathetic to these stories as people hate the idea of losing freedom of transportation. Think of how hard you would fight to keep from giving up your car. Thankfully, we will reap the technological benefits of smarter cars that will not allow themselves to be driven into stores.
