B-TOWN BIZ: Captain G Bringing Multi-Cultural Flavor To Downtown Burien

During the recent Burien Bites event we had the good fortune to swing by a tiny little shop on 6th Avenue, across the street from where Sal’s Deli used to be.

That little hole-in-the-wall eatery is Captain G’s Ottoman Kitchen and after being voted into 3rd place in the Burien Bites competition, it seems like every other person we talk to is raving about the food.

The man behind the counter is Gencay Tunc, but everyone just calls him Captain G.

A Turkish citizen of Armenian descent, he truly is a captain, having worked as a merchant seaman before turning to cooking as a profession.

Many will refer to his food as Mediterranean, but if you ask Captain G about it he will take the time to explain the blended cultures that made up the Ottoman Empire and how that influenced the cuisine of the region. All we can say is that the results are delicious!

The menu currently offers up a variety of vegetarian appetizers and grilled meat dishes. The appetizers are served cold and range from Turkish style white beans to eggplant salad and amazingly fresh hummus while the meat dishes are all Halal.

Captain G plans to update the menu every six months.

Right now, the Ottoman Kitchen is open daily from 11 AM to 9 PM but Captain G is planning to start taking a day off to rest so watch for him to update the days and hours.

The Captain also told us that they’re planning to test the breakfast waters in July by offering a Turkish Breakfast on weekends.

Payment is currently cash or check only, but they’re getting set up to accept debit and credit cards and hope to have that in place by the end of this month.

Captain G’s Ottoman Kitchen is at 15217 6th Avenue SW in Burien.

I’m so glad you posted this! The last time I had Turkish food was in NYC several years ago. It was one of the highlights of our trip there. It’s wonderful to know we have access to Ottoman flavors here in our little Burien. Our family will make a visit before the end of the month. Maybe this weekend!
