City & SW King County Chamber of Commerce to Present 4th of July Parade

Can you believe that the 4th of July is just about three weeks away?

The City of Burien and the Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce [1] (we’re members) will be presenting the 91st Annual Burien Independence Day Parade, starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, 2012.

“The Burien Independence Day Parade has gained a reputation as one of the most enjoyable and spirited community parades in the region,” according to an announcement. “Community pride will shine with marching bands, energetic dance teams, elaborate floats and vintage autos! Local community members will recognize familiar faces among the many organizations and elected representatives that participate. The parade is set against the charming backdrop of Downtown Burien, which features a diverse mix of business, retail and restaurants, along with the central landmarks of Burien Town Square and City Hall. Everyone is invited to come and be a part of this longstanding Burien tradition.”

Grand Marshal John Feeney.

This year, the Grand Marshal of the Burien Independence Day Parade is John Feeney, recipient of the Burien Citizen of the Year award. He is a mentor in Highline’s New Start program, as well as a volunteer at several elementary school reading programs. John will be joined by several of his reading students in the parade.

Participants can still be in this year’s parade – just download an Application [2] and Hold Harmless Agreement [3] (PDF files) and get them to the Chamber by June 20.

Some of the typical parade participant categories include:

Along with the usual parade participants (ie: Ronald McDonald on a Segway!), this year a very historic crowd favorite will grace the streets of Burien – the Miss Burien Hydroplane [4] will be part of the Discover Burien [5] group! Several B-Town Bloggers will be walking with the historic boat and handing out coupons, along with other local businesspeeps.

The parade begins at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at Ambaum Blvd. SW and SW 149th Street. The route will head south on Ambaum, east on SW 153rd, north on 4th Ave. SW, then west on SW 152nd.

The Burien Independence Day Parade is sponsored by the Boeing Company, the Burien/White Center Rotary Club, Highline Amateur Radio Club, Highline Medical Center, CleanScapes, and Republic Services. Partners for this event are the City of Burien and the Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce. Media Partner is South King Media [6].
