Please welcome our latest Advertiser – Bicycles West – located at 804 SW 151st in Burien, kitty corner from the Fire Station!
Bicycles West was recently taken over by Kurt Fykerud, who has turned this longtime local bike business into a hub of community activism.
Bicycles West is actively engaging, supporting, and partnering with local organizations that directly and indirectly advocate for cycling as a lifestyle, transportation, and recreational activity.
“We cannot view our role in these efforts passively,” Kurt said. “We feel we have a responsibility to commit time, energy, and financial support to the cause. When we partner with organizations like Cove to Clover, this is not a simple ‘business decision’, but an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to bicycle advocacy to protect and build cycling culture and infrastructure in Burien. WE ARE ALL CYCLISTS!”
Like we do with all our Advertisers, we’re offering the good folks at Bicycles West a forum to share their message:
What makes BW Burien special?
Everything we do in Burien revolves around relating to, and serving, a small community of diverse backgrounds and cycling needs. Bicycles West recognizes the need for a strong, supportive, and active bicycle store in Burien, and we are committed to building and maintaining that relationship. Whether you need bikes for children or adults, we have you covered. Though the store is cozy, Bicycles West shares inventory across all three stores, and we are happy to transfer products to best serve our customers. Road, Mountain, Kid’s, Hybrid, BMX, Parts, Clothing, Accessories and Service you will find it all here!
Several local cycling, health and fitness advocacy groups are active here that Bicycles West actively supports and assists with community events. WABI Burien- Events & Advocacy for a Walk/Bike Community is a terrific organization that is building something special for local residents. From Burien Bike Day, SaFaRi (Safe Family Rides) to regular bike fairs and numerous other activities, WABI is working for a healthier, more active, and ecologically friendly Burien. Their website details events, path information, and efforts to keep bicycle and pedestrian interests at the forefront of the local political scene. Support WABI, Bicycles West does! But we don’t stop there. Store Manager, Lance, has actively worked with Boy Scout Troop 375, teaching bike safety and basic care. The annual Joe Matava Memorial Classic criterium bike race is on July 4th, and Bicycles West is a sponsor of this three decade plus event.
Bicycles West has been serving the cycling needs of western Washington since 1948. Legions of cyclists, from children to those much further down the road in their journey have purchased bikes, accessories and service from our stores over the years. Three- plus generations…thousands of bikes delivered to riders all over the Northwest! With so many active cyclists out riding and enjoying the benefits of cycling, it is not a huge surprise Washington was selected by the League of American Bicyclists as the most Cycling Friendly State in the US for 2012. Retailers such as Bicycles West have played an instrumental role in developing ridership and public support for the funding and infrastructure efforts that have made this possible in Washington. Our state has become an example for how government, public and private entities can work together to drive healthy, environmentally conscious approaches to social and political partnership. While still have plenty of room to improve, and maintain our cycling infrastructure and support, Bicycles West has confidence Washington will continue to be and example for the nation. Ownership In 2010, Kurt Fykerud purchased the three Bicycles West locations: Burien, Tukwila and Lynnwood. Kurt, a lifetime cyclist, and long time Trek dealer representative for the region has been actively involved in the cycling culture and business here in Washington for his entire professional life. With a tremendous understanding of the cycling business, as well as of the needs of local cyclists, Kurt has set out to re-create Bicycles West to best serve the needs and desires of riders, while developing a sustainable and family-friendly business model.
