Summer in the Northwest is the best time for entertaining, and whether the weather is cloudy or fair, you can bring the warmth of Portugal to your next gathering with these easy entertaining ideas from WCB Advertiser Fatima Hemmons’ own Luso Food & Wine in White Center.

Easy Portuguese Evening Menu:
Start with a round of refreshing drinks such as Sumol, a popular Portuguese soda available in several fruit flavors. Guests can quaff a cold Cerveja such as Sagres or Super Bock. or sip a satisfying Portuguese Red such as Palestra. “This is such a wonderful buy, rating 89 points by Wine Spectator”, Says Fatima , “My customers are amazed when they see I have this. It has been so popular, especially since the New York Times rated it a ‘best value’ earlier this year” (read more about Palestra in this 2012 NY Times Article:

Along with this bevy of beverages, appetizer options include flavorful smoked Portuguese sausages Chouriço, and Linguiça produced by Barcelo’s. “Very different from the Mexican Chorizo,” adds Ms. Hemmons. Round out your platter with boiled, sliced potatoes tossed in a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar, along with Marçarico Azeitonas olives and Tremoços (the salty lupin beans – a classic foil for a frothy Cerveja).

As guest’s appetites open, and the conversation heats up, toss beautiful Pork Loin “Bifanas” on the grill. “These are so easy!” says Fatima, “They are already seasoned and ready to go.” Served with a fresh summer salad dotted with Uniqueijo cheese and crusty baguette slices, these tender cuts pair well with more red wine and conversation.

A sultry satisfaction settles in. The atmosphere couldn’t be more relaxed, or improved by anything other than the classic dessert of Portuguese cream tart. These “Pastel De Nata” are irresistible, simply arranged on a lovely plate and finished with a sprinkle of cinnamon and powdered sugar. Very traditional, very tasty! A must with a glass of one of the many obligatory Portuguese Red Ports found at Luso, or as an option serve the very unique White Port or Moscatel, with “Jubileau” Portugeuse Dark Chocolate with Salt.

As the sun sets, and guests melt into complete satisfaction, settle in with another drop of Port and get ready for your ” Great Summer Entertainer” accolades.
