Local Nature Preserve Offers Family-friendly Events Through Summer

Though it’s been around since 1996, many locals are still discovering a little-known nature preserve that is hidden just beyond commercial areas of Fairwood and Maple Valley – at SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve, local families are finding a secluded place to learn and play with their children, and meet other residents.

“This wonderful place is not only a great place to come to for peace and quiet but also a great place to educate children,” said one parent who attended Outdoor Preschool.

At other events like Wilderness Adventures, children age 7+ learn about wildlife, orientation and ecology through games and exploration. Outdoor Preschool and Wilderness Adventures are offered every Friday with a new theme each week. In addition to the fun and games, volunteer opportunities and monthly work parties help youth earn service hours and beef up their resume.

Every September, the community transforms this quiet wetland into a raucous occassion at the annual celebration known as Frog Frolic– a free public event with live music, raffle prizes, silent auction, guided tours and potluck.

The featured star of these events is Shadow Lake Bog, a unique type of wetland which was once common in King County, but is now a rarity as a result of rapid development over the past century. A remnant of the glaciers which once covered this area, peat bogs provide unique habitat for plant and wildlife communities and are critical to water quality and flood control.
