The halls of Highline Public Schools are filled with the sound of music, thanks to the partnership of Highline Music4Life and the Rotary Club of Burien, SeaTac, and Des Moines!

Since the inception of Highline Music4Life, 75 instruments have been donated and $23,000 has been raised towards musical instruments and programming. In addition, 5 violins and 5 violas have recently been donated to start up an orchestra program at Pacific Middle School. This summer, Highline Music4Life will purchase 45 guitars and ukuleles for classes at Cascade and Pacific middle schools this fall. This purchase supports the district’s effort to increase fine arts electives at the middle school level and provides an arts course that especially appeals to students from Latino and Pacific Island cultures who initially may not have been interested in band.

David Endicott, the President of Music4Life, states, “research clearly has shown that children who participate in instrumental music do better in so many key scholastic disciplines, such as math, science, history, languages and computer science. Highline Music4Life is an ‘education program’, rather than a music program which allows all children to have the same opportunities to learn and perform well academically”.

This year, Highline Music4Life is the prime beneficiary of the 3rd Annual Poverty Bay Blues & Brews Fest which is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Des Moines and Powell Homes. Over the last two years, the Poverty Bay Blues & Brews has raised $13,000 for Highline Music4Life and the goal of the fest is to raise $10,000 this year.

The Poverty Bay Blues & Brews Fest will feature over 15 Northwest handcrafted brews, such as Airway Brewing and Pike Breweries and live musical performances from Blues talents Mark Dufresne, Stacy Jones Band and Junkyard Jane. The event will be held on Saturday, August 25th from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Des Moines Beach Park.

You can help! By purchasing a ticket to the Poverty Bay Blues & Brews, not only will you be able to enjoy some quality local brews and great music, you will also make a difference and give the gift of music to a well-deserving child!
