Banding together with God’s Grace in Action, the Exchange Club of Highline, the Lion’s Clubs of Burien and Normandy Park, and local churches will begin distributing next week backpacks for several hundred Highline District students.

Exchange Club president Bonnie Johnson said volunteers will set up Monday at St. Paul’s of Shorewood Lutheran Church, and on Wednesday “we will fill the backpacks and begin distributing them to the schools in the area.”

The schools will give the backpacks with school supplies to needy students. Johnson estimates that about 600 backpacks will be distributed this year.

Johnson “did not want to see the backpack program end” when Love In, the original sponsor, folded, “so I took on this program.

“The Exchange Club has continued to support the program more and more each year. We began to make it a part of our January auction and we have been raising $5,000 or so for this project.”

This is Johnson’s 10th year running the program. During this time they have distributed a total of about 4,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to Highline students.

Participating churches are St. Paul’s of Shorewood Lutheran Church, John Knox Presbyterian Church, Westside Foursquare Church, Highline Methodist Church, Glendale Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church of Des Moines, Crosswalk Ministries, Boulevard Park Presbyterian Church, Grace Community Church, Church by the Side of the Road, Heart of God Fellowship, Highline Christian Church, Normandy Park Congregational Church, Riverton Park Unite Methodist Church, Taproot Church, and St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church.
