Burien Parks Staff Honored by City for Innovative Social Media Efforts
Burien Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department (PaRCS) staff members were recently awarded the City of Burien’s ‘Innovative Stewards Award’ for their efforts in using social media and the Internet to reach the public.
“For the past several years, the PaRCS Department has led the way in the innovative use of social media and the Internet,” reads an announcement on the city’s website. “Beginning in 2006 with the establishment of its custom website domain (www.BurienParks.net) for marketing purposes, the Dept has served as a test bed for new technologies to reach the public and better market its services, facilities, special events and recreation offerings to its customers. PaRCS’ efforts in this regard have been recognized by colleagues around the state who frequently point to Burien as an example for how parks departments are using social media. It has also been referenced in presentations for national audiences at conferences of the National Recreation & Parks Association.”
PaRCS has actively used online technologies not only to “get the word out” but also to get out photos and videos to better inform the public about what the department does. The dollar savings associated with the reach of these new forms of communication are significant, as the cost of social media marketing is negligible relative to traditional forms of print media and advertising.
The Innovative Stewards Award is presented annually to a City employee or a team of employees who best exemplify outstanding productivity, problem-solving, improved service, significant dollar savings, or other achievements in public service. The award is presented by the City Manager at the annual Employees Appreciation Event. Members of the group also receive a paid day off and complimentary group lunch.
