The Rotary Club of SeaTac last week delivered to Chinook Middle School (in SeaTac) a check for $1,000, with all funds earmarked toward helping students who may need financial help in acquiring clothing that meets the school’s new uniform policy.

According to the school’s website:

“Chinook will have uniform requirements for the 2012-13 school year based on a super majority (72 percent) of our sixth and seventh grade parents voting on this topic. Both parents and administration strongly agree that the adoption of a mandatory uniform policy would provide … benefits to our school.”

“Chinook uniforms would clearly identify Chinook students from other students who should not be on our campus during operational hours,” the school’s website reads. “Uniforms have been shown to contribute to a more positive and focused learning environment (and) to a stronger sense of school pride.”

Chinook has an enrollment of approximately 550 students, and is a 2011 Washington Achievement Award recipient.

The school’s uniform policy for the 2012-13 school year allows cardigans and polo shirts, but disallows hoodies. Shirts must be solid colored and free of letters or writing, with exceptions for spirit wear. Oversized shirts are not allowed, and skirts and shorts must be at least knee-length. Capri and cargo-style pants are allowed.

Each year, the Rotary Club of SeaTac contributes between $6,000 and $10,000 to the local community with priority given to youth and seniors who could use a hand up.

The club is comprised of 18 members and is always open to speaking with local residents who are interested in joining and actively participating.

The club meets every Thursday at 5 p.m. at Galliano’s Cucina on Military Road South in SeaTac.
