New King County Sheriff’s Deputies to be Assigned to Southwest Area

King County Sheriff Steve Strachan announced last week that 14 new deputies will be hired over the course of the next few months to “beef up” patrol in unincorporated areas of the county, and on Friday he announced that some will be assigned to the Burien/White Center area.

“The southwest area has one of the highest volumes of calls in unincorporated King County,” Strachan said. “Adding more deputies will provide better service to our residents and increase safety for our deputies.” The Sheriff hopes to add at least 3 new deputies to this area as soon as they are ready for deployment.

“This is just what the public expects from its elected leaders – to deliver the services they need within the extremely limited revenues we have,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine. “By collaborating with his staff to create new efficiencies, the Sheriff is able to put more police on the street within his existing budget, and I thank him for that.”

The new deputies will be hired over the course of the next 3 months and will complete training and be assigned by the end of 2013.

So the reality is they are hiring more police to service Area Y but on the other hand the scare propaganda from the pro-annexation folks is that police service will be reduced if they don’t vote for annexation. Mike Martin says the levels will remain the same as the “current levels” if we annex..

If this article is correct it actually sounds like Area Y will have more police coverage if they stay with King County and vote not to annex.

Kudos to the King County Police Department for this great news!

    From the West Seattle Harold:
“King County Sheriff Steve Strachan announced on Oct. 12 that he plans to hire 14 additional deputies from September to January, using money saved in their existing budget
    (article says an estimated $600,000)
due to a new zoning model and a reduction in overtime hours.

It is unclear at this time where those deputies will be assigned, although KCSO Sgt. Cindi West said Southwest King County has the highest call loads and the Eastside has the largest geographical area to cover, so those are the most likely candidates. West said the “Southwest” region includes White Center, Burien and SeaTac, for example, so it could mean more KCSO coverage in those areas.”

    http://www.westseattleherald.com/2012/10/19/news/update-sheriff%E2%80%99s-office-hire-14-new-deputies-addi

Further details explaining the beefed up coverage, which includes the huge east side area, and where the $ money for extra personnel came from can be found in the same article.

BTW— before this announcement gets packed up to someone’s “annexation soapbox ” (whoops, too late), note that this welcome decision in police coverage has nothing to do with area Y annexation.

You’re right. It has to do with the region, number of calls for service, and officer safety. Burien/White Center/SeaTac are mentioned specifically, so not just unincorporated.

It does have to do with refuting the scare tactics used by the Robison Martin and King County into scaring residents of Area Y into voting to annex. King County pays for patrolling the UNINCORPORATED Areas.. The left hand says one thing and the right hand does another. Burien pays for every cop they have on the payroll.

    • John Poitras says:

Did you even READ the article.. Do you understand what King County is responsible for paying for as far as police and what the cities are responsible for paying for? Apparently not.
I QUOTE from the FIRST TWO PARAGRAPHS OF THE ARTICLE:

King County Sheriff Steve Strachan announced last week that 14 new deputies will be hired over the course of the next few months to “beef up” patrol in UNICORPORATED AREAS of the county, and on Friday he announced that some will be assigned to the Burien/White Center area.

You complain about my anti annexation soapbox but the pro annexation one you are standing on apparently isn’t waterproof and is lacking facts.

        I am anti-annexation. Strongly.

I live and work in BP and the annexation was the worst thing to come down the pike. The voters were snowed over/misled and we, in the BP area, were sucked up by Burien as just one more big asset to profit from.

The fact that the current propaganda to the voting public is being duplicated in this second annexation vote scares the daylights out of me just as much as it does you. However, my voting choices are a private matter and to be forced to air my opinion/those choices here (to defend my post from attack) bugs me to say the least.

My comment about soapboxes was a knee-jerk reaction to the same old comments I hear here time and again; any non-related article seems to prompt comments that twist news items back onto the annexation issue. Trolling of any sort and having to slog through reams of angry/one subject comments annoys me.

That said, what I was trying to get at was that the article should have been taken as it was written and commented upon as just that. It was not an article highlighting future actions taken by KCPD to address WC crime ONLY but as an announcement of possible upgrades to protection for ALL of the unincorporated areas.

How did that crow taste John? Anyways, they pulled that same stunt about no 911 emergency response, police, fire, etc, when they scared a lot of the people into voting for that farce of an annexation the first time around. Maybe we should take a vote about un-annexing ourselves from Burien.

That’s great news for Area Y as long as we vote NO for annexation. Since Burien can’t afford what they have now. This is just another reason to vote NO on annexation. Jerry Robison said they need to dip into the reserves next year as well, come on give it up Burien. You can’t tell me that burien campaign for has been been forth rite and upstanding. They don’t seem to have the principles that citizens from Area Y have

JIMMY… or Lutz or whatever NHUAC member you are? What have you ever done or said that was of benefit to the citizens of Burien? What information have you ever provided? Are you one of Gordon Shaws (Mr Annexation) disgruntled supporters or just another member of the leap off the fiscal cliff crowd NHUAC attack and distract clique?
Btw .. Its called freedom of speech and the fact that you take umbrage from our comments actually tells me we are hitting a nerve and even if you have nothing to say I respect your right to post here.

How about doing your own fact checking Jimmy? Oh wait.. there are no actual FACTS that support your position, if you want to post some of your pro annexation propaganda I would be happy to refute it here as I aways do.

That’s what I’ve come to expect from pro annexation people like you. You don’t add to the issue at hand you try to distract away from it. I don’t live in Burien now and don’t want to. Ever. You do have a good idea about moving to Bellevue especially if annexation is approved. Fact check away jimmy at least I present the facts. Why don’t you try something new jimmy, add to the conversation.

  6. Joey Martinez says:

This was explained at the last annexation meeting. Mr Ufkes asked the question.

There are no actual cuts to Burien Police. The Contract with the KCSO is set in such a way that Burien budgets for yearly costs. However, year after year the actual costs have been hundreds of thousands below budgeted.

      Frances,

We don’t have to and don’t want to become Burien. Just vote NO and we can stay unincorporated…oh but wait, the “Yes Burien” literature I received on Saturday states; “Now is the time to decide! The law says North Highline cannot stay unincorporated” I must have missed that law.

And its “Endorsed by our Firefighters.” Which firefighters? Liz Giba? The station on 112th? I doubt it. So which?

Nothing happens if we vote NO. In fact it will be much better much better than being part of burien. No increase in taxes. No less social services. We get to keep King County Animal Control. No parking enforcement. More police presence. No mismanagement from martin and robison and Co.

      Vote NO on annexation!
