Fundraiser Nets Over $27,000 for Global Connections Band’s Trip to D.C.
‘An Evening of Jazz and Friends,’ a fundraising event held Oct. 28 to benefit Global Connections High School’s Wind Ensemble, was a sell-out success, raising over $27,000!
Generous individuals, businesses, and community organizations donated to send the Wind Ensemble to Washington, D.C., to play at the Presidential Inauguration Music Festival in January.
The school, where nearly 80 percent of the student body qualifies for free- or reduced-price lunch, needs $60,000 to pay for travel and accommodation for the band members.
The success of this event was made possible by many community members and organizations.
“Our community extended its generosity to these students in a way that I have seldom witnessed,” said Superintendent Susan Enfield. “I thank each and every individual, business and organization for their tremendous support. They demonstrated how very deeply our community cares about its students, as well as the power of community collaboration.”
Other funds have been raised through parent pledges and events, coupon book sales, and direct donations. However, donations are still needed to fulfill this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. More than 120 guests were entertained by Pearl Django, Sonado, and the Global Connections Jazz Ensemble. KOMO TV reporter Elisa Jaffe acted as emcee. Jaffe met the students in September when she reported on the prestigious invitation.
Cedarbrook Lodge, SeaTac Rotary, and the Highline Schools Foundation were the signature sponsors of the event – all donated time and funds. Cedarbrook Lodge General Manager Scott Ostrander, inspired by the students, donated lavish packages for dining and overnight accommodations at the Lodge that drew high bids from attendees. Des Moines Rotary and Mike’s Community Cup donated funds and auction items.
