B-TOWN BIZ: New Gluten-Free Market & Bakery Opening Soon in Olde Burien
Story & Photos by Scott Schaefer
If you’ve driven through Olde Burien lately, you may have noticed covered windows and signs of work being done inside the old Goodie Gumdrops location on the corner of SW 152nd and Ambaum Blvd. SW – a new gluten free bakery and market is preparing to open in that space.
Start Fresh Bakery, Deli and Natural Market is aiming to open in mid-December, offering gluten-free food items like bread, pastries, cookies and other baked goods. They’ll also be taking over the old B-Town Burgers space next door, where they’ll open a gluten-free, healthy deli offering fresh gluten-free pizzas, breakfast, lunch, sandwiches and more.
“One reason I’m opening a gluten-free business is because of my own intolerance,” said Owner Catherine Barashkoff, who suffered from a major allergic reaction six years ago.
Barashkoff told The B-Town Blog that she was “always the sick kid” and has had a lifelong struggle with dietary issues. It wasn’t until she had a big allergic reaction six years ago – where her face and throat swelled up and she ended up in the E.R. – that she discovered what was wrong with her.
“I went to a Naturopath, who asked me to keep a food diary,” she said. “And after six months of intense study we determined I was gluten intolerant. After I changed my diet, all my problems went away and I felt 15 years younger!”
Barashkoff wants to help others suffering from food allergies and intolerance to be able to find healthier options locally.
“I now have to go to five different stores to shop for groceries, and that’s not right,” she added.
And that’s why she’s opening Start Fresh Bakery, Deli and Market, which will offer an in-house bakery, raw foods, vegan alternatives, and even food for the Paleo “Caveman” diet. It will be a small store, with refrigerators and frozen items, a bakery, deli and more. There will also be take-out foods, dinner to go, and even gluten-free beer, specialty wines (Barashkoff has filed for a liquor license) along with seasonal items.
When Barashkoff saw that Goodie Gumdrops was vacating the space last summer, she hopped on it, and is now turning this great location into her dream business.
“Food has always been a passion in my life,” she told us. “And now I’ll have the opportunity to share what I’ve learned through my own experiences with others. Food is an overlooked key in a healthy lifestyle that people often take for granted. Not enough people pay attention to what they’re putting into their bodies. But you don’t have to sacrifice to eat well and be healthy.”
Barashkoff is overseeing the remodeling of the interior of the space herself (she has years of experience from a previous business), as you can see in the photos below, taken by Scott Schaefer (click images to see larger versions/slideshow):
