The Burien Library Advisory Board (BLAB) is hosting a warm clothing drive to benefit homeless youth in the area, beginning Monday, Dec. 3 and continuing to Friday, Dec. 14.
“BLAB is a group of high school students who commit to volunteering at least one hour a month a the Burien Library, planning and promoting programs, offering feedback on services to teens, and making a positive difference in the community,” reads an announcement.
From Dec. 3 – 14, BLAB members will be collecting donations of warm coats, new underwear, hats, gloves, socks, and scarves that will be passed on through YouthCare, a Seattle-based nonprofit working with homeless teens.
“All members of the community, not just teens, are encouraged to donate,” they told us.
In 2012, approximately 50 Burien Library Advisory Board members have logged over 700 volunteer hours helping with programs, maintaining the library’s book collection, and assisting at community events. Burien residents may have seen them promoting the library at the Farmer’s Market by dressing up as library mascots Dewey and Sketch or performing a Flash Mob and dancing to the parody song “Read It Maybe. In April, they participated in World Book Night 2012, handing out free copies of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and The Lovely Bones to people in downtown Burien. As part of the Burien Library’s Book Buddies program, BLAB members help children in grades K-4 practice their reading once a week.
“I’m consistently amazed by the creativity and drive of these teens, and pleased that they are choosing to volunteer at the library,” says Rachel McDonald, who, along with her coworker, facilitates the Burien Library Advisory Board.
