With music, treats, hot beverages and general good cheer, about 150 people enjoyed the annual Burien Tree Lighting Festival last night (Dec. 5) at longtime Burien business Economy Wiring/YB Tubless.

Just minutes after the the St. Francis School Choir, under the direction of Bill Rispoli, entertained the gathering with about a half dozen holiday tunes, Santa Claus pulled onto the scene aboard a Burien/Normandy Park fire engine with lights ablazing.

Santa led the crowd in a vivacious countdown and the big Fir just off SW 148th lit up around 6:30 p.m.

Eighty-seven-year-old Gwin Smith, founder of Economy Wiring, was on hand.

“I was the first one to climb that tree and string the lights,” many decades ago, recounted Mr. Smith.

“One time I went on vacation and my son Jay brought in 16 spas!”

The spas were a hit and the surname “YB Tubless” was added to the company moniker.

Jay Smith is the current proprietor. Shawn Becker serves as Operations Manager.

“We had a fire here in the early 1980s,” Jay Smith recalled. “We remodeled and in conjunction with local Fire District 2 our annual Christmas Outreach Program was started.”

Many Festival attendees brought in canned food which will be delivered to local families.

Question, I’ve lived here 45 yrs and still don’t know.. Can somebody tell me if the single string lights on our tree is a tradition? It has looked exactly the same for as long as I can remember. I would love to know the story.
    Thanks
