If sirens and police lights awoke you early Saturday morning, here’s why – around 15 or so police cruisers from multiple jurisdictions slowly pursued a stolen moving van style truck on a chase that started around 4 a.m. in Des Moines, then ended in Burien’s Three Tree Point neighborhood.
Police used a spike strip to stop the stolen truck shortly after it limped along SW 172nd Street, then Maplewild Ave SW at around 25 MPH during the slow pursuit.
A suspect was taken into custody without incident.
The suspect led cops on the chase, which started in Des Moines, went up I-5 into south Seattle, then back down around to where it ended near Three Tree Point.
BTB Founder/Publisher Scott Schaefer witnessed the somewhat surreal-looking chase around 4:25 a.m. as it passed his home on Maplewild at a very slow pace.
“The truck made a scraping sound as it passed the house,” Schaefer told himself as he wrote this story. “It sounded like either a tire was flat or the brakes were bad. The slow-moving truck was followed by at least 15 cruisers from different jurisdictions, all with lights ablaze.”
UPDATE 12/29/12 12:37 p.m.: Sgt. Dave Mohr of the Des Moines Police Department updated us at 12:36 p.m. with this info:
Pursuit started the pursuit at 3:37 a.m. on Pacific Highway South in Des Moines, when an officer observed a white box truck with no plates on it.
The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but it didn’t stop. A pursuit ensued.
The truck was stolen in the city of Redmond on Dec. 27, and the pursuit went through SeaTac, Burien, Normandy Park, Kent, Seattle and then back into southwest King County (hence the large number of cruisers following it).
Several attempts were made with spike strips to stop the vehicle, which kept driving at slow speeds.
Ultimately the spike strips flattened two tires, and the vehicle continued at slow speeds until stopping at 33rd & Maplewild Ave SW in Burien.
Subject is a 45-year old male, who was booked into the SCORE Jail in Des Moines.
No further details were available at this time, but if we learn more we’ll update this post.
