‘Captain G’s,’ a diner that serves up Ottoman and Mediterranean food, will be opening very soon at its new location at 643 SW 152nd in downtown Burien.
“I am very excited to finally be opening my new location,” the Captain – also known as Gencay Tunc – told The B-Town Blog Friday morning (Feb. 1). “We should be open in a week to ten days!”
The restaurant, which originally was located at 15217 6th Ave SW, moved into the space that formerly housed The House Restaurant.
Last time we checked in with the Captain – in October 2012 – several volunteers helped paint and prep the new space (read about that and see photos here ). It took him a bit longer than he wanted, but with the help of some local business advisers and friends, the Captain is finally ready to open in this new spot.
A Turkish citizen of Armenian descent, Gencay truly is a captain, having worked as a merchant seaman before turning to cooking as a profession.
Many will refer to his food as Mediterranean, but if you ask Captain G about it he will take the time to explain the blended cultures that made up the Ottoman Empire and how that influenced the cuisine of the region. The menu will offer up a variety of vegetarian appetizers and grilled meat dishes. The appetizers are served cold and range from Turkish style white beans to eggplant salad and amazingly fresh hummus while the meat dishes are all Halal.
“We’re also going to be adding some other new dishes, so be sure to drop by,” he added.
We’ll announce when Captain G’s opens, so stay tuned, or check his Facebook page here .
