Crews to Replace Nearly a Mile of ‘Bumpy’ Pavement on SR-518 this Year

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced Monday (Feb. 11) that it will be replacing nearly a mile of ‘rough and bumpy’ concrete pavement, as well as 50 failing panels, on both directions of SR-518 between I-5 and Sea-Tac Airport.

Work is expected to begin in May and be completed in late 2013.

“Crews will grind and smooth concrete pavement and replace approximately 50 failing concrete panels,” reads an announcement. “The majority of this work will take place on weekday nights; drivers can expect occasional weekend work and ramp closures.”

This is part of a new, two-part $7.3 million contract awarded to Atkinson Construction, which also includes replacing cracked concrete panels and pavement on I-405 in Bellevue.

“These highways carry thousands of drivers each day, and the concrete roadway surface has simply worn out,” said Janice Fahning, WSDOT project engineer. “This spring we’ll begin work to repair 3 miles of cracked and rutted roadway.”

While most of the I-405 work will occur at night, crews expect to need several weekend closures of  in Bellevue this summer to complete that leg of the work.

The full extent of lane closures and the timetable will be posted on the WSDOT website as the project gets closer to construction.

    “Thousands of drivers each day” indicates need but not the cause of the damage (except for studded tiires, which is track wear). Structural damage is a function of the cube of the weight (I’ve worked in that field). I’d bet most damage was caused by trucks hauling dirt for the third runway, not cars. I don’t have the exact numbers but in terms of orders of magnitude that works out to one trip by a fully loaded dump truck and trailer being roughly equivalent to a days worth of cars in terms of structural damage to the highway.

    Gas tax, car tab tax, road repair tax, etc. etc. etc. Major, major money being taken from us every day.
    Why are many of our roads in such pitiful shape? Anybody drive through West Seattle lately? Everywhere many roads are in bad shape.
    Where is all this money going? What kind of racket is going on at WSDOT? SDOT?
    Has anybody ever looked under the rocks? Followed the money?
    Something is fishy in Denmark.
