The Cedarhurst students were honored during an award presentation by Burien Deputy Mayor Lucy Krakowiak. Monique was awarded her certificate and prize by ESC trustee and Renton denizen, Larry Reymann. Both Krakowiak and Reymann are long-time supporters of the Environmental Science Center and involved in environmental stewardship and academic achievement. During the award ceremonies, they spoke to students on the importance of caring for the places where we live.

The students of Mr. Kevin Plough’s 4th grade class at Cedarhurst Elementary had been studying the Puget Sound waterways and biodiversity. Plough integrated the art contest into his curriculum to have his students artistically express what it means to be an environmental steward of our earth and waterways. Students were then given the option to enter their assignment into the ESC’s art contest. Ms. Sheri Stevens, art instructor at Nelson Middle School, also encouraged her students to enter the contest. The teachers and parents of all contestants are an invaluable asset to encouraging our students to strive for self-expression and environmental passion.

Over $400 in prizes were awarded included a family membership to the Seattle Aquarium, family pass to the Woodland Park Zoo, admission tickets to the Pacific Science Center, art supplies from Artist and Craftsman Supply and Daniel Smith Inc, plus nature and art books.

The grand-prize winner’s artwork will be featured on posters and invites for the ESC’s Earth Day Dinner and Auction on Saturday, April 20th from 6:00pm-9:00pm at the SeaTac Community Center. Please consider supporting programs such as the art contest by joining the naturalists, staff, and board of trustees for the event of the year!

Tickets are $50 per person or be a super sea star and reserve an entire table for $500.
