In the last couple of months, the Des Moines Farmers Market has gone “National”!

In December, Des Moines Waterfront Famers Market board president Wayne Corey and manager Rikki Marhol put on a webinar for the Farmers Market Coalition, a national organization that seeks to strengthen farmers markets’ capacity to serve farmers, consumers, and communities by providing the rapidly growing movement with information, tools, and representation at state and federal levels. They help build networks, link peers, inspire leadership, and connect farmers markets old and new with resources for success.

Their PowerPoint presentation focused on helping small markets raise funds thru avenues that go beyond special events. In other words, most markets need to fundraise 12 months out of the year to make ends meet. During the webcast up to 80 markets nationwide participated. For their efforts, the Coalition made a nice donation to the Market’s Endowment Fund.Farmers Market Coaltion Logo

And just this month, a national magazine – Farmers Market Today – featured the artwork of local artist Jenney Elliott on its cover. The artwork was the basis of last season’s poster that became a collector’s item. An article inside the magazine noted the market’s move to its new location on the waterfront at the Des Moines Marina.

And, to top it off, the Washington State Farmers Market Association had Wayne and Rikki repeat the fund raiser presentation at the state conference in Vancouver, Washington in January.

Wayne added:

“We are really rock’n and are working vigorously putting together another outstanding market for our upcoming season starting June 1st. Coming back will be everyone’s favorite vendors, food and music plus some exciting new ones.”

To keep up with all the markets happening, log onto www.DMFM.org and sign up for the weekly e-newsletter that will be starting soon and of course don’t forget to “Like” their Facebook Page.

Burien ….why do we have such a small Farmers Market..??? Empty lots all around for a real large Family friendly Market. Our old city hall has been vacant for a very long time. Is it time to move off the street and onto a larger lot?

I agree. The other HUGE problem with the Burien Farmers Market is that THERE ARE NO FOOD VENDORS. Having food vendors brings more people out to markets. Hot dogs and soda are the LAST THING I would ever want to put in my mouth when surrounded by a whole bunch of beautiful fruits and vegetables. I know a LOT of people go to the Des Moines Farmers Market just for the amazing food you can get there. Burien needs to pick up the slack and try a little harder.

We love the Des Moines Market and the Burien Market. As we all know, they are on different days of the week thus attracting different shoppers and meeting different needs. I love the idea of adding food vendors. I think it is important to discover and address the needs of Thursday shoppers vs. Saturday shoppers. Publicity aimed at this population highlighting these offerings may help attract shoppers and even more vendors. I’m looking forward to the new season!
