The Northwest Center – along with Burien-based business Freggies – are now helping strengthen the Burien community by helping residents find employment.

Adults in the King County area with developmental disabilities, especially those with cognitive disabilities, can now benefit from the Northwest Center’s employment services. NWC Works, the division of Northwest Center that provides this exceptional service, connects individuals with local businesses that are looking for committed and skilled employees.

When an individual approaches Northwest Center, the staff there interviews applicants and then prepares individually tailored employment plans based on the skills and interests of the applicants. Northwest Center also provides specialized training to assist applicants in finding gainful employment. The organization plays a crucial role in dispelling the misconceptions that employers may have about the skills and capabilities of people with disabilities. They also ensure that the job placements prove to be beneficial for both the employer and the employee in the long run.

One of the beneficiaries of Northwest Center’s job placement program is Klariyssa, who works at Freggies five hours a week and is an integral part of their workforce. She is so energetic and alert that some of her coworkers have endearingly nicknamed her the “Chief Energy Officer.” Klariyssa loves interacting with her co-workers and is great at what she does.

“A few months ago,” said one Freggies staff member, “Melanie Cates, a Northwest Center job coach, approached us regarding job opportunities. We needed some help in distribution, since we are experiencing increased volume due to our ‘Burien Only’ offer. Klariyssa was amazing; we hired her right away.”

The “Burien Only” offer that has created quite a buzz among Burien residents is Freggies’ way of giving back to the community. Based out of downtown Burien, Freggies wants to promote healthy living among fellow Burienites, and this is why the company is offering organic produce to all residents of the city for below what it costs them to produce it.

Jerrod Sessler, the founder of the company, not only grew up in Burien but also resides here and is raising a family here. He feels that all residents of his hometown should be able to enjoy the benefits of organic produce that Freggies has to offer, and this is why the company is offering Burienites the option to purchase a weekly or bi-weekly box of fresh, organic produce worth $40 for only $24!
