That’s Patti Stewart Burgess on the left, posing with Losa Berhane, the first-ever recipient of the Highline High School Alumni Foundation’s $1,000 scholarship named in honor of Patti.

Losa is an outstanding individual and plans on attending Western Washington and becoming a teacher.

The HHS Alumni Foundation awarded some $43,000 in scholarships this year.

Burgess’ family and friends (she’s definitely still alive and kicking in Seahurst) announced in March (read our original story here) that they had set up a scholarship in her name through the auspices of the Highline High School Alumni Foundation.

“As we know, Patti has contributed greatly to her community,” said her son, Marc Anderson. “We felt this would be a wonderful way to honor her accomplishments and provide funding for deserving students.”

Patti has lived in the Highline area since 1934, when her family moved from Chicago. She graduated from Highline High School in 1950. She had a long career as teacher, counselor and principal in the Highline School District. She was honored as the Highline High School Alumni of the Year in 2009.

Congrats to Losa for winning this scholarship!
