Craig Knutson, right, was named Interim City Manager for the City of Burien Monday, July 1.

by Ralph Nichols

The Burien City Council unanimously appointed City Attorney Craig Knutson as interim city manager at Monday’s meeting.

Knudsen’s appointment becomes effective July 25. He will replace City Manager Mike Martin, who announced in June that he was resigning to become city administrator for Lynden, WA.

Martin’s last day on the job in Burien will be July 24. Knutson, who will also continue as city attorney, will receive a 10 percent pay increase while serving in the dual role.

  1. Kex says:

That is wrong on so many levels.
    1. The City Council should have been prepared for this day by hiring an assistant city manager.
    2. Knutson always backed Martin, so it will be like he never left.
    3. He’s an attorney, with different education, training, and experience than is required for a city manager.
    4. If he was needed as city attorney, then how can he do both jobs at once?

I’m sure there are other reasons why this is a bad idea, but I can’t think of any reasons to suggest this was a wise decision.

Kex, get out of my mind! I’m thinking the same thing and agree with every sentence 100%.

Good people lose when attorneys get involved.

  2. I will miss Mike, he is a stand up guy. I wish him well on his future endeavors.
