SCAM ALERT: City of Burien releases warning on paving company scams

The City of Burien announced in its ‘Business Watch’ newsletter this week that some residents have recently had experiences with a couple of “alleged” paving companies who are operating without Right of Way Permits and Business Licenses.

“The pavers are approaching businesses and residents, alike, and offering to patch or pave driveways, connect driveways to the City streets or resurface asphalt at ‘great deals,'” reads the warning. “Some of the pavers have done the work at a substandard level and others have taken deposits and disappeared, not to be seen again.”

In at least two cases, City officials have approached these companies and asked to see their Right of Way Permits or Business Licenses and been refused. The City also reports that they have also become aggressive towards inspectors by blocking them in and trying to intimidate them when confronted and ordered to stop work and get permits. There are legitimate paving firms doing business in Burien, but they currently seem to be out-numbered.

The City is asking that all businesses and residents assist in identifying and requesting both Business License and Right of Way permits.

If you are having any work done, please feel free to contact the following Burien City personnel to determine if the company has a valid Business License and permit.

For Business License info, please call 206-241-4647 and speak with Monica Lusk, Adriene Buckley or Kathy Wetherbee.

For Right of Way Permits, please call 206-439-3161 and speak with Rick Atkinson.
