REMINDER: Local Screenwriter/Attorney Steve Edmiston will be doing a presentation on The Maury Island Incident for the Des Moines Historical Society Wednesday night, Sept. 11, starting at 7 p.m. at the IOOF Hall in Des Moines.
This is a fascinating piece of forgotten local history that was recently turned into a short film – set to be released this Fall (learn more about it here) – that was shot locally in Des Moines, Burien, Tukwila and off the shores of Maury Island.
When is a Hoax not a Hoax?
Edmiston will present the hard facts, ceaseless controversies, and tragic truths surrounding a fascinating and misunderstood UFO mystery which occurred on June 21, 1947, just off Maury Island. Steve will document the 1947 “Summer of the saucers” phenomenon; the government’s fascination with flying discs; the allegations and evidence; history’s first noted appearance of the “Men in Black”; the multiple tragedies; and an explanation why this story (from our own backyard) has until now been largely, and wrongfully, forgotten.
Using the FBI’s own documents, Steve will challenge us to re-examine whether the Maury Island Incident should be forgotten as a confessed hoax, or should instead equal or even replace Roswell as a preeminent event in our modern popular culture mythologies surrounding UFO’s, conspiracies, and cover-ups.
Come see a piece of ‘slag’ allegedly from the incident!
Filmmakers will share an important piece of evidence from the story – a piece of slag found on Maury Island by Elmer Frombach. There may also be other interesting artifacts and documents presented, so be sure to get there early.
Questions will be answered during and after the presentation, followed by awarding of door prizes and an opportunity to visit and enjoy refreshments. The film’s Director (and Publisher/Editor of this blog), Scott Schaefer, will also be on hand.
The Des Moines Historical Society looks forward to seeing familiar faces, and welcomes visitors and newcomers. Please join us on Wednesday September 11, 2013 7-9 p.m. at the Des Moines IOOF Hall, located at 728 So. 225th Street. The 100-year old IOOF Hall is in downtown Des Moines, on So. 225th street, one-half block west of Marine View Drive.
