A new group has formed in B-Town – “Buy Nothing Burien” – and despite the name, it’s not meant to hurt local businesses, but rather help residents trade and give things away to each other for FREE.

“Buy Nothing Burien” was started a couple of weeks ago by Rebecca Dare and Mellow DeTray, who add:

We created this space to promote neighborliness through sharing resources, and reduce overall waste and consumption. Buy Nothing: Give Freely. Share creatively. Post anything you’d like to give away, lend, or share among neighbors. Ask for anything you’d like to receive for free or borrow. Keep it legal. Keep it civil. No buying or selling, no trades or bartering, no soliciting for cash, we’re a gift economy. When you have things to give away, simply post a picture if possible, along with a description. The item does not need to go to the first responder; it’s up to you to decide who to give it to among the respondents, whether by lottery or by expressed need, or by clever poetry or witty humor.

This group is based on “The Buy Nothing Project,” which began on Bainbridge Island and is explained in this video:

To join, you must submit a request via the group’s Facebook Page.

“Just ask to be invited if you’re interested in being a part of this experiment,” Organizers said. “If you haven’t been approved, it’s because we can’t see enough of your profile here to verify that you’re a real person with connections to Burien. Send us a message if this happens to you and we’ll sort it out!”
