LETTER: And now, Dobkin/Giba respond back to Mark Ufkes’ Letter to the Editor
[EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a Letter to the Editor, written by a Reader. It does not necessarily reflect the opinion of The B-Town Blog nor its staff:]
We are not impressed by the rambling accusations of Mark Ufkes in response to our letter. “The people of Burien and North Highline deserve the truth….”. Unfortunately, Ufkes failed to respond to most of the facts we presented – he simply made more unsubstantiated accusations.
A phone conversation today with a representative of King County who participated in the meeting Ufkes wrote about confirmed that Ufkes is very clever, but his story is not accurate. That is clear to us. Our review of the records Ufkes received confirms that any private, one-on-one meetings about the governance of North Highline were between King County and Seattle – not Burien. His allegation is false.
Ufkes’ allegations that we had a meeting with King County Executive Constantine ‘or at least talked with him’ are untrue. Ufkes’ allegation that we have been pressuring the county ‘always with the emphasis on getting Burien back into the annexation game’ is also untrue.
It is true that we have fairly regular contact with King County on issues affecting North Highline including our need for more deputies, the effort to keep our storefront deputy, trying to stop the over-concentration of poverty in North Highline, the effects of Seattle’s Nicklesville on White Center, the increasing homeless population here, the concern about the potential effect the King County’s loosening of permitting requirements, our effort to have the White Center Library rebuilt where it is (what we voted for in 2004 and have been paying for ever since), etc.
Independent White Center is another Ufkes myth. The truth is that White Center is anything but independent. We’ll say it again. If Burien wants to build a better future, it should support people and businesses that demonstrate honesty and integrity – not those who spread half-truths and lies dressed up as “facts.” Integrity has value. The people of Burien and North Highline deserve the truth. Those working so hard to deceive our communities should try it, they might like it!
Barbara Dobkin and Liz Giba
