This Thanksgiving Day, at least one local family is grateful for the extra attention and concern shown their elderly parents – both suffering from dementia and reported missing from their Adult Family Home in Normandy Park early Thursday morning.

Around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, the Normandy Park Police Department was alerted that two residents – Richard and Doris Rogers – had not yet returned after leaving Wednesday afternoon. They advised staff that they were heading to the bank. An employee noticed them leaving the Adult Care Facility northbound on 1st Ave South in the 16600 block.

According to reports from the daughter, police knew that they used their debit card in Seattle at a 7-Eleven store.

Earlier in the day, they had left the Adult Care Facility and drove to their daughters old residence in West Seattle. When they could not contact anyone at her home they went back home. They could have visited the 7-Eleven at that time.

According to other reports, they may have tried to visit the Bank of America in the 300 block of SW 152nd in Burien. They do not bank with them, but they have cashed checks for them in the past.

The couple eventually pulled in to a Pink Elephant Car Wash and Chevron gas station at 2501 Pacific Ave in Tacoma early Thursday morning. The woman went inside to ask for a restroom and she was advised by the clerk there wasn’t one available. The couple bought a little bit of gas and left the gas station. A few minutes later the couple came back and the woman asked for a restroom again. Apparently the clerk has relatives with dementia and knows the signs. She was able to get the license plate of the vehicle and convince the couple to sit inside the business and have coffee. She then called the police and Tacoma PD confirmed that they were a missing couple from Normandy Park.

Police reported that the family went to pick them up.

We know they will all have a Happy Thanksgiving today – and we hope you do too!
