Hello Neighbors and Residents of Burien,

Please complete the attached survey as soon as possible. Teens, families and actually all Burien citizens, we need to know what kinds of businesses, services and recreational opportunities you would like the City of Burien to have. No more complaining! Help to be part of the solution by telling us what you want for entertainment, shopping, etc. opportunities in Burien. For more information about why this information is needed, please see the previous B-Town Blog letter here.

To complete the survey hit the underlined Survey Monkey address shown on your screen and answer the three questions. Please write in any comments that you want considered in the survey results. Type those comments into the boxes provided.

When you think about Economic Development think about businesses and services you would like to be in Burien. Also think about recreation kinds of businesses you would like and support if they were in Burien. Don’t list a business that you wouldn’t stay in the city to use or support. This information could really help current businesses as well as businesses that are willing to relocate know what Burien citizens want and are needed and in what areas of the city. After all, it is the citizen consumer that decides what businesses make it or don’t make it in a city. Also these businesses and services attract new citizens to a city. Let’s help to get business going and moving ahead in the city. Survey Monkey will only collect your answers for 2 weeks so please vote soon.

I did not see a place to say that I wanted to see live theater / performing arts, or visual arts. What about a gallery? What about a live theater? What about a scene shop? What about a glass blowing studio? What about a painter’s studio? What about a dance studio? You get the idea. With 113,000 nonprofit arts organizations employing 2.2 million artists in the workforce, the arts are a strong force in our economy. http://www.americansforthearts.org/sites/default/files/pdf/get_involved/advocacy/research/2012/artsindex12.pdf. Is this poll skewed against the arts for a reason?

After sleeping on my comment, I am sure there was no malice in the poll leaving out the arts businesses and employment. I wish I could take the last “snarky” sentence out of my pervious comment.

However, the poll still speaks to the lack of understanding that arts creates jobs. Many jobs.

Arts organizations are responsible businesses, employers, and consumers. Spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations—just a fraction of the total arts and entertainment industry—was an estimated $61.1 billion in 2010, and leveraged an additional $74.1 billion in event-related spending by arts audiences. This $135.2 billion in economic activity supported 4.1 million FTE jobs and generated $22.3 billion in total government revenue. http://www.americansforthearts.org/sites/default/files/pdf/get_involved/advocacy/research/2012/economic_impact12.pdf

Art added $135.2 Billion dollars to the US economy, why shouldn’t some of that be in Burien?
