Council to review previous Community Center plans at Monday session

by Scott Schaefer [1]

The Burien City Council will review a presentation at its Monday, Feb. 24, Study Session about previous plans – last reviewed in 2008 – for a new Burien Community Center that were put on hold due to the economy.

The public is welcome to attend the presentation, which starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

It appears that this new construction would replace the “old” community center – now known as The Burien Annex (recently hit by an arson fire [2]) – at the intersection of SW 144th and 4th Ave SW.

Mentioned as “model” examples in the plan are facilities in Lynnwood, Tukwila, Federal Way, Renton, Bellingham and Vancouver WA.

This “old but new” plan includes several new features like a “Leisure Pool” – many of which are not found in the current Community Center (at 14700 6th Ave SW):

While the proposed Multipurpose Hall may be able to accommodate it, one feature we found missing from this proposal was a Theater. In fact, a search for the word “theater” showed no results in this presentation.

Cost estimates run from $35 to $44 million dollars to build an entirely new facility, which would likely be funded by a bond or an increase in property taxes.
