LETTER: New council should pull Burien out of the Potential Annexation Area

[EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a Letter to the Editor, written by a Reader. It does not necessarily reflect the opinion of The B-Town Blog nor its staff:]

I have a dream that one day our elected officials will actually do what the people want them to do. I have a dream that the will of the people will take precedence over the desires of the rich and powerful. I have a dream that the people can live in peace knowing that their elected officials are looking out for their best interests.

A year and a half ago the people of Area Y (White Center) said NO to annexation 2 to 1. The three Burien City Council Members who supported annexation and were up for reelection this last November are all gone. The people have spoken. They have said NO to annexation. Even Seattle recognizes that annexation makes no economic sense.

I know that the people I have talked to are more anti-annexation now then they were before this all started. We are an intensely independent freedom loving lot here. Any new attempt at annexation would be an insult and just make us angry. Many think it’s over. It should be over.

If this new council truly represents change they would be well advised to pull Burien out of the PAA (Potential Annexation Area). By doing so they would send a clear message to the people that they have listened. It would reassure its citizens that they have no intention of wasting another half million dollars on another ill-fated attempt at annexation for the foreseeable future. It would force future councils to start from square one and remind them that annexation was incredibly unpopular. This would also send a clear message to those at county and state levels of government that the City of Burien will no longer be their stooge.

It’s time for us to tell the City of Burien to pull out of the PAA and end annexation for good. Here’s a quick way to tell them what you think: http://www.burienwa.gov/index.aspx?NID=75

I want to send a big THANK YOU to all of you who are helping end this fight.

Let’s make this dream happen!

- Patrick LeMoine

I totally agree with the sentiment. One minor correction. Gerald (Jerry) Robison who is still on the council was and still is a big annexation proponent.
In fact he once infamously said before annexation was so soundly defeated that the one thing he wanted to leave as his legacy was the annexation of white center.
Jerry is up for election in two years…

John, you are not the first person I heard this from. I have personally witnessed Mr Robinson talk about spending around 20 years on annexation. It’s his baby and he can’t let it go as I once again just witnessed at last nights Burien Council Meeting. There is a campaign going on to rewrite history and we need people like you remind everyone what really happened.

        Pat,
What a warrior! Don’t give up the annexation fight! Good for you and all the others
up there in Burien! This fight is going on all across the u.s! It’s all about getting
taxes from the hard working citizens. In Nevada, we have a battle going on concerning cattle ranchers. Some of these folks have owned ranches for over a hundred years!
They are re-writing history. Yes the turtoise were here first and the cattle were imported.
But, the rules were more fair for ranchers a long time ago. Don’t let them re-write
history. Good letters and you might consider running for office.

I don’t know if my memory is right but I think it was the rich and powerful of burien cough cough lake burien residents that did not want the annexation because they kinda don’t want there upper class friends saying things like is your city really part of Rat city now eww and were the same people that spent a lot of money putting that PAC together like the ones that post letter after letter to each and every editor of any news website with in a 20 miles circle of burien on how bad white center is same group that had members that try to tell you how to vote but are not even register to vote in king county them self’s same group that came on here and try to talk down and bicker and call names and claim random things are true that are not true about anyone that even has the slightest thought that annexation might be a good thing

p.s. this letter to the editor some people might find kinda offensive you kinda took the start of the letter from really important person in history you have to think this type of stuff when post something public like this in this day and age

I still say it’s a 100 year decision and it should be treated like one. What was White Center like 60 years ago? What will it be like 60 years from now?

    Think about it.
