From an email received Thursday, June 26 from Steve Browning:

As her next door neighbor, I wanted to let your readers know that longtime Burien resident, Carol Selander, passed away quietly earlier today from the effects of a stroke she suffered last week. She had just been returned home from a local facility so that her last moments could be in familiar surroundings, surrounded by her family who had flown in from all over the country, coincidentally, this past week to help celebrate one of her children’s birthdays.

Carol and her late husband Ken, lived in the same home in the Seahurst/Three Tree Point area for over 60 years. They were heavily involved with a variety of business, civic, cultural and philanthropic activities and were important leaders in many of the city’s most significant events and developments during that period.

Ken passed away in 2007 (http://bonneywatson.com/obituaries/detail.html?id=2424).

Mrs. Selander is survived by her five children, all of whom were raised in the home in which she died.

Burien has lost a beloved, respected and irreplaceable advocate and friend.

It makes me very sad to learn of her death. Carol was a wonderful person, a lover of art and heritage and music. I never heard her say an unkind word about anyone. She had a radiant smile and a beautiful voice and loved to sing. She was a mainstay of her church choir for many years. She was one of the founders, along with Dottie Harper, of the Burien Arts Association. Her husband, Ken, was a founding board member of the Highline Historical Society (then the Burien Heritage Society). My sincerest condolences to her family on the loss of their lovely mother and grandmother. She will be missed by everyone that knew her.

Duane Quande was a member of Burien Lions Club as was Carol Selander. Carol was always one of Duanes favorites. When we attended meetings and functions the room always lit up when Carol walked in. She was very sweet and caring. She will be missed by many people. Mary Q.
