A “Back-to-School Fair” was held at Steven J. Underwood Park in Des Moines on Thursday, Aug. 7, where some 500 free backpacks were given out to local, low-income students. The backpacks were filled with free school supplies. In addition, free shoes, haircuts, food, and plenty of other necessities to get the school year off to a good start were handed out by volunteers with the Highline Schools Foundation and many others. Kids were also invited to play fun games led by Des Moines Parks and Rec, or sign up for the free and reduced lunch program offered by Highline Public Schools, explore the school district’s website in a bus, have fun in a photo booth, get free pancakes and drinks and much more. Of course, this event would not be possible without the support of these Sponsors:

  • Comcast
  • The Grainger Foundation
  • Sonic Warehouse and Transportation
  • Des Moines Parks and Rec
  • The City of Des Moines
  • Highline Schools Foundation
  • Des Moines Rotary
  • Recology/Cleanscapes

  • Puget Sound Energy
  • South King Fire and Rescue
